Study of a Boy with a Lute

Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 · circa 1890

Study of a Boy with a Lute
Elihu Vedder's ink sketch captures a young musician in Renaissance dress, kneeling as he plays a stringed instrument. The figure's rounded proportions and expressive pose demonstrate Vedder's skill in figure study—a foundational practice for illustrators of his era. The loose, gestural linework shows the artist working out compositional ideas, with a second head study visible at right. Vedder, an American painter and illustrator active in the late nineteenth century, drew from classical and literary sources throughout his career, producing works that bridged fine art and commercial illustration during a period when those boundaries remained fluid.
