Figure Study for a Fountain Design

Elihu Vedder's preparatory drawing demonstrates the classical training underlying American decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. This study of a youthful male nude, rendered in ink and chalk on paper, explores anatomical proportion and contrapposto stance—conventions inherited from Renaissance tradition. The halo suggests allegorical purpose, likely for a public fountain or civic monument.
