Figure Study for a Fountain Design
Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 · circa 1890

Elihu Vedder's preparatory sketch demonstrates the classical training and anatomical precision underlying late 19th-century American decorative arts. This study of a standing male nude, rendered in black chalk with white heightening on toned paper, exemplifies the academic methods Vedder employed before executing monumental public commissions. The figure's contrapposto stance and fluid musculature reflect both Renaissance precedent and contemporary salon practice. Vedder, known for his imaginative illustrations and mural designs, produced numerous such studies to resolve compositional and formal problems before committing to finished works in stone, metal, or paint.
