Studies of Drapery of 'Fortune'

Elihu Vedder's preparatory sketches for his allegorical painting *Fortune* demonstrate the artist's careful study of fabric and movement. Working in graphite and wash on colored paper, Vedder rendered the flowing garments from multiple angles to understand how drapery falls and folds in space. These studies were essential to academic practice in the late nineteenth century, allowing artists to resolve compositional challenges before committing to their final canvases.
