Study for 'Fortune'

Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 · 1899

Study for 'Fortune'
Elihu Vedder's preparatory sketches explore gestural studies of hands and a hooded head, rendered in ink on purple-toned paper. These figure studies exemplify the working method of late-nineteenth-century illustrators who translated classical allegorical subjects into visual form. The drawings capture movement and emotion through economical linework—techniques foundational to sequential art. Vedder's approach to anatomical construction and expression informed the visual vocabulary that newspaper cartoonists and comic strip artists would adopt and refine into the twentieth century's dominant narrative medium.
