Study of Female Model

Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 · 1885

Study of Female Model
Elihu Vedder's figure study demonstrates the academic training methods that shaped American visual culture in the late nineteenth century. Working from live models, artists developed observational skills in anatomy, proportion, and the effects of light on form. Vedder's use of white chalk on toned paper—a technique that allows for rapid tonal modeling—was standard practice in studio preparation. Such drawings served as foundation work for larger compositions and reflected the influence of European academic practice that dominated American art instruction during this period.
