Portrait of Hans Makart
William Unger · 1883

William Unger's etched portrait depicts Hans Makart, the Austro-Hungarian painter who dominated Vienna's art scene in the late 19th century. Rendered in fine cross-hatching and linear marks characteristic of reproductive printmaking, the work captures Makart in three-quarter view, his distinctive beard and contemplative gaze fixed beyond the frame. Makart's draped robe suggests both studio practice and the self-fashioning of the artistic personality. As a printmaker specializing in reproductive engravings and etchings, Unger translated paintings and photographs into widely distributed prints, making images of prominent cultural figures accessible to middle-class audiences across Europe.
