D. J. Pound, British, active ca. 1860 · 1860

This engraved portrait depicts James Thomas Brudenell in full military dress uniform, adorned with medals and insignia denoting his rank and honors. Brudenell was a British cavalry officer who gained fame—and notoriety—as commander of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War. The elaborate uniform, with its ornate frogging and decorative elements, reflects his status as a prominent military figure of the Victorian era. The artist D. J. Pound captures the formal conventions of mid-nineteenth-century portraiture, presenting Brudenell as a man of authority and distinguished service.
