Flemish Street Scene with a Scottish Man

Flemish Street Scene with a Scottish Man
Will Hicox Low's engraving depicts a figure in Scottish dress moving through a medieval Flemish courtyard. The composition employs dramatic perspective and chiaroscuro to organize multiple figures across the architectural space—techniques that would become central to sequential narrative art. While primarily known as a muralist and illustrator, Low worked within the visual traditions that informed early comic strip design: distinct characters placed within gridded environments, careful attention to gesture and posture for storytelling, and the strategic use of light and shadow to guide the viewer's eye. The print exemplifies how nineteenth-century illustration conventions prepared audiences for the visual language newspapers would soon standardize in their comic pages.
