Portrait of Maximilian I
Victor Jasper, Austrian · 1880

This engraved portrait by Austrian artist Victor Jasper depicts Maximilian I in formal dress, shown in profile wearing a dark fur-lined cloak and characteristic broad-brimmed hat. The imperial coat of arms appears in the upper left, with Latin inscription above identifying the subject. The work exemplifies nineteenth-century engraving technique, using fine parallel lines to model form and shadow. As a commemorative portrait of a Holy Roman Emperor, the image served both documentary and dynastic purposes, circulating through prints and publications to assert legitimacy and dynastic continuity across European territories.
