A Snow Slide in the City
Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1860

Winslow Homer's illustration captures an urban winter scene alive with competing dramas: children sledding, adults slipping on ice, a shopkeeper's awning collapsing under snow's weight. The composition orchestrates multiple simultaneous incidents across a crowded street, each figure responding to the chaos with distinct gestures and expressions. Homer employs dense cross-hatching and overlapping forms to convey the disorder of city life meeting season's hazards. Published in the American periodical press, such wood-engraved narratives formed the visual vocabulary that would structure modern sequential art—multiple actions unified within a single frame, human figures expressing emotion through body language and facial type, architecture and weather as active elements in human affairs.
