Niagara in Winter from Canada Side
· 1857

This hand-colored lithograph depicts Niagara Falls frozen in winter, viewed from the Canadian side. The composition captures the horseshoe curve of the cataract with ice formations at its base, while figures in period dress stand on the snowy foreground, establishing scale. The print exemplifies mid-nineteenth-century landscape tourism imagery, when Niagara was America's premier natural attraction and a subject for commercial print production. The technical process of hand-coloring stone lithographs allowed publishers to create affordable reproductions for travelers and armchair tourists, making geographical wonders accessible to a broad audience.
