Figure Study for Seal of the University Club, New York

Kenyon Cox's pen-and-ink study depicts two classical male nudes holding hands, rendered in academic drawing tradition. The figures stand in contrapposto, their musculature precisely articulated through line work. Cox prepared this design as a proposal for the University Club's institutional seal, selecting allegorical male forms to represent scholarly brotherhood and intellectual fellowship. The symmetrical composition and neoclassical vocabulary reflect the Beaux-Arts training dominant in American art schools of the 1890s. Though not ultimately adopted, the drawing exemplifies how institutional identity during this era drew upon Renaissance and Greco-Roman aesthetic authority to convey permanence and cultural prestige.
