The Pali, Oahu

John La Farge, American, 1835–1910 · 1890

The Pali, Oahu
John La Farge's sketch captures the windward cliffs of Oahu's Pali Pass, rendered in quick pen strokes that suggest atmospheric depth through layered horizontal lines. The composition emphasizes the dramatic topography of Hawaiian volcanic terrain, with a river valley cutting through ridged formations and human figures and animals scattered across the lower landscape for scale. La Farge, an American painter and muralist known for travel sketches and decorative arts, visited Hawaii in the late 1880s. This working drawing exemplifies the 19th-century practice of capturing landscape impressions for later development into finished paintings or prints, demonstrating how artists translated observed geography into compositional studies through economical linework.
