This hand-colored engraving from a French playing card set depicts Marie Alexandrovna, Empress of Russia, in formal court dress of the Second Empire period. Grimaud of Paris produced these decorative cards during Napoleon III's reign, each suit representing different monarchies and political figures of the era. The Queen of Spades wears an elaborate white lace gown with a blue diplomatic sash, a jeweled headdress, and a fur-lined cape in crimson and gold—visual shorthand for imperial rank.
