Five of Clubs Playing Card

B.P. Grimaud, Paris, France · 1858

Five of Clubs Playing Card
This Five of Clubs from a mid-nineteenth-century French deck demonstrates the standard suit pip arrangement of the era. The card displays five club symbols—four positioned at the corners in standard orientation and one centered—rendered in the bold, uniform style characteristic of B.P. Grimaud's Paris printing house. Grimaud cards of this period were known for their clean typography and reliable production methods, making them affordable and widely distributed across Europe. The cream cardstock and simple black-on-white design reflect the commercial printing techniques of the Second Empire, when playing cards served both recreational and decorative purposes in middle-class households.
