The Horse Guards
Joseph Pennell, American, active England, 1857–1926 · 1907

Joseph Pennell's etching depicts the Horse Guards Parade in London, a military courtyard that served as a frequent subject for early-twentieth-century artists. Pennell, an American printmaker long active in England, rendered the scene with the assured linear technique characteristic of architectural etching. The composition frames the parade ground's classical facades and the iconic Horse Guards building with its central cupola, organizing the urban space through careful perspective and graduated shading. Small figures populate the plaza, conveying the site's role as a functioning ceremonial and administrative center. This work exemplifies the period's sustained interest in documenting London's institutional architecture through fine printmaking.
