Study of a Classical Male Head (from a plaster cast)

Leon Dabo, American, 1868–1960 · 1881

Study of a Classical Male Head (from a plaster cast)
Leon Dabo's charcoal study exemplifies nineteenth-century academic training in drawing from plaster casts of classical sculpture. This pedagogical practice—copying idealized Greco-Roman heads in profile—formed the foundation of formal art instruction across Europe and America. Young artists mastered form, proportion, and light through such studies before advancing to life drawing. Dabo, who would become known for his luminous landscapes and murals, here demonstrates the disciplined technique demanded by the École des Beaux-Arts tradition, where anatomical precision and tonal subtlety were prerequisites for artistic success.
