Fashion Plate
This hand-colored lithograph presents five figures—three women and two men—modeling mid-nineteenth-century attire. The women wear bonnets, full skirts with layered construction, and fitted bodices typical of the 1850s silhouette; the men sport top hats, tailored coats, and trousers. Detail sketches of bonnets appear at top. Such fashion plates were distributed through newspapers and periodicals to document current styles and showcase textile patterns, serving as visual instruction for dressmakers and consumers. The standing poses and frontal arrangement allow clear inspection of construction details and proportions—a compositional method that anticipated the sequential, close-study format later adopted in narrative illustration and early comic strips.
