This hand-colored engraving presents a parade of contemporary fashions across five figures—a gentleman in top hat and checked trousers, and four women displaying variations in cloaks, bonnets, and day wear. Five hat styles appear above. Such fashion plates were standard fare in 19th-century periodicals, serving as illustrated guides to current modes for tailors, dressmakers, and style-conscious readers. Though not narrative in form, these costume studies established the sequential presentation of figures and garments that would influence later visual storytelling. The refinement of color printing and compositional arrangement in fashion journalism laid groundwork for the illustrated narrative conventions that emerged in newspapers and eventually the comic strip.
