Study of Nude Figure
Louis Schaettle, American, 1867–1917 · circa 1900

This preliminary sketch by American artist Louis Schaettle demonstrates the academic figure drawing that underpinned turn-of-the-century commercial illustration. The confident line work and anatomical study reflect training methods that shaped early comic artists. Schaettle worked during the emergence of newspaper comics, when illustrators schooled in classical draftsmanship adapted their skills to sequential narrative. The figure study—with its attention to pose, movement, and form—represents foundational techniques that artists like Richard Outcault and Winsor McCay would translate into the visual language of comic strips, establishing conventions of character design and bodily expression that defined the medium.
