Study of Veiled Nude Figure

Louis Schaettle, American, 1867–1917 · circa 1900

Study of Veiled Nude Figure
This ink sketch by American artist Louis Schaettle demonstrates the academic figure study tradition at the turn of the twentieth century. The composition presents a standing female nude draped in translucent veiling, a classical motif exploring the interplay between concealment and revelation. A smaller sketch below suggests alternative pose studies. Schaettle's economical line work captures anatomical structure while the flowing drapery reveals the artist's interest in textile effects and volumetric form. Such studies were foundational to professional artistic training and preparation for larger salon compositions during this period.
