Study of Nude Figure

Louis Schaettle, American, 1867–1917 · circa 1900

Study of Nude Figure
This anatomical study by American artist Louis Schaettle demonstrates the academic drawing tradition of the early 20th century. Executed in ink on yellowed paper, the figure study employs confident contour lines to establish form and volume, with selective shading to define musculature and spatial relationships. Such studies were foundational to artistic training, allowing practitioners to master human proportions and movement before applying this knowledge to narrative compositions. Schaettle's economical line work and observational approach reflect the classical methods that underpinned commercial illustration and fine art practice during this period.
