The Antikamnia Calendar: An Opening Bud
Louis Crusius · 1896

This calendar page by Louis Crusius presents a memento mori figure—a skull-headed infant in christening clothes—holding a toy drum. The image exemplifies fin-de-siècle visual wit, combining mortality symbolism with domestic sentimentality. Embedded calendars for September and October 1897 served as functional advertising for Antikamnia Chemical Company. The composition demonstrates the period's embrace of darker allegorical imagery in commercial illustration, where death and life coexist without narrative irony. Such calendar art, distributed widely through pharmacies and shops, reached mass audiences before magazines standardized the comic form, establishing visual humor and symbolic narrative as tools of popular culture.
