Study of Landscape, Lake Maggiore, Italy

William Stanley Haseltine, American, 1835–1900 · 1857

Study of Landscape, Lake Maggiore, Italy
William Stanley Haseltine's pencil studies capture the layered topography of Lake Maggiore with precise linear notation. The three horizontal compositions record the same Alpine vista from slightly different vantage points or atmospheric conditions, demonstrating the artist's systematic approach to landscape analysis. These working sketches—with their minimal detail and emphasis on contour and mass—served as foundational studies for finished paintings. Haseltine, an American landscape painter trained in Düsseldorf, traveled extensively throughout Europe gathering such studies, which he would later develop into large-scale compositions in his studio. The sketch's economy of means reflects 19th-century plein-air practice and the artist's commitment to direct observation from nature.
