Study of Landscape, Spezia, Italy

William Stanley Haseltine, American, 1835–1900 · 1855

Study of Landscape, Spezia, Italy
William Stanley Haseltine's pen study captures the fortified hillside town of Spezia on Italy's Ligurian coast with precise architectural detail. Working in ink on paper, Haseltine rendered stone fortifications, clustered buildings, and mountainous terrain through careful cross-hatching and linear perspective—techniques that would define his mature practice as a landscape painter. The drawing exemplifies nineteenth-century artists' practice of on-site studies, recording specific locales for later compositional reference or exhibition. Haseltine, trained in Düsseldorf and based in Philadelphia and later Europe, became known for luminous seascapes and coastal landscapes that combined topographic accuracy with romantic sensibility.
