Royal Arches, Washington Column, North Dome
Carleton E. Watkins captured this panoramic view of Yosemite Valley's granite formations with the mammoth plate camera technology that defined American landscape photography in the mid-nineteenth century. The massive Royal Arches dominate the composition, their columnar jointing rendered with precise detail across the albumen print's subtle tonal range. Watkins's systematic documentation of the valley—made possible by newly developed large-format equipment—established the visual template for representing the American West. His work circulated through stereoscopic cards and bound albums, bringing distant landscapes into Victorian parlors and influencing both artistic and political perceptions of western wilderness.
