Design for a Plate

This decorative design represents the aesthetic innovations of Noritake, the Japanese porcelain manufacturer established in Nagoya in 1876. By the 1880s, Noritake had begun exporting hand-painted wares to the American market, establishing a New York office to manage distribution. The design features a characteristic palette of cobalt blue, gilt, and deep red enamel applied to a curved plate form. The ornamental border and delicate floral garland exemplify the refined taste of the Meiji period, when Japanese manufacturers synthesized Western design principles with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Such export wares became essential to the developing middle-class aesthetic in America and Europe during the late nineteenth century.
