Design for Lidded Jar

This porcelain design from the Noritake workshop combines Japanese decorative tradition with Western Victorian taste. The jar features hand-painted pink and purple flowers with green foliage against a cream ground, bordered by a geometric band at the rim. Multiple views show the vessel's rounded body and fitted lid. Noritake, established in Japan in 1876 and operating from New York by the 1880s, pioneered the export of decorated ceramics to American markets. Such pieces exemplified the period's fascination with Japonisme while meeting demand for affordable, high-quality tableware and decorative objects in middle-class homes.
