Design for a Milk Pitcher

This hand-painted design study shows a porcelain pitcher decorated with alternating panels of pink roses and black foliate ornaments. The pattern exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement's embrace of asymmetrical composition and nature motifs popular in late-nineteenth-century ceramics. Noritake, established in Japan and operating from New York, exported refined tableware to American markets during the Gilded Age, when imported Japanese and Japanese-inspired porcelain commanded premium prices among middle and upper-class households.
