Design for a Pitcher

Noritake, Japan and New York, New York, USA · circa 1880

Design for a Pitcher
This painted design study shows a ceramic pitcher decorated with flowering vines in blue and purple tones. The composition features delicate blooms arranged at the rim and base, with naturalistic leaves and stems rendered in watercolor across a cream ground. The sketch demonstrates the Noritake company's approach to porcelain decoration during the Meiji period, when Japanese manufacturers expanded production for Western markets. Such designs were transferred to ceramics through lithographic or hand-painting processes, blending Japanese aesthetic principles with forms and decorative sensibilities appealing to late-nineteenth-century American and European consumers. Noritake, established in Nagoya in 1876, became a major exporter of decorated tableware, developing a distinctive house style that combined floral naturalism with refined technical execution.
