Design for a Plate

This hand-colored design showcases the aesthetic principles of late-nineteenth-century Japonisme, a movement that profoundly influenced Western decorative arts. The curved format follows the contours of a porcelain plate rim, while a meandering floral border of roses and smaller blossoms creates an ornamental frame. Noritake, a Japanese porcelain manufacturer with operations in New York, produced such wares for the American market, blending Japanese floral motifs with Western plate forms. The delicate brushwork and asymmetrical composition reflect Japanese design traditions, while the commercial production method—hand-coloring over printed outlines—enabled efficient manufacturing of luxury tableware during the industrial era.
