Design for a Jug

Noritake, Japan and New York, New York, USA · ca. 1880

Design for a Jug
This ceramic design study combines European and Japanese aesthetic traditions. The composition features white roses with naturalistic foliage arranged around an ornamental handle. Decorative borders frame the composition in dark brown, while blue geometric patterning and purple flowering vines create rhythmic movement across the surface. The design reflects Noritake's position as a bridge between Japanese craftsmanship and Western market demands during the Meiji period, when Japanese manufacturers began exporting decorated wares to America and Europe. Such pattern studies guided the production of functional tableware and ornamental vessels for export markets.
