Design for a Jug

This design study shows a porcelain jug decorated with naturalistic flowers—roses, chrysanthemums, and small yellow blooms—arranged across a cream ground with purple vining. The geometric Greek key pattern in dark brown frames the composition at neck and base, while the handle is rendered in bold silhouette. The work exemplifies Noritake's production methods during the Meiji period, when Japanese manufacturers combined Western floral motifs with Eastern decorative traditions for export markets. Such designs circulated between factories in Japan and New York, driving the international trade in decorated ceramics that shaped late nineteenth-century taste.
