Design for a Decorative Jar

This design study showcases the ornamental vocabulary of Noritake porcelain during the Meiji era. The composition reveals the hand-painted technique applied to Japanese export ceramics: floral motifs—red flowers, blue blossoms, and green foliage—distributed across scrolling vine borders rendered in black and gilt. The palette of cobalt, cream, rust, and sage reflects the market demands of Western consumers. As a Japanese firm with operations in New York, Noritake synthesized traditional Japanese design principles with Victorian aesthetic preferences, producing tableware that bridged two markets. This working drawing documents the collaborative process between design and manufacture that defined late-nineteenth-century decorative arts production.
