Design for a Vase

This ornamental vase design combines Japanese and American aesthetic traditions during the height of the Japonisme movement. The composition features yellow blossoms rendered in naturalistic detail against a luminous landscape backdrop of blue mountains and warm horizons. The geometric base sketch demonstrates the designer's working method—a preliminary rendering of the vessel's form beneath the decorative band. Noritake porcelain, emerging from Japan's Arita region with operations in New York, pioneered accessible hand-painted ceramics for American markets.
