Design for a Plate

This hand-colored design sheet showcases the decorative vocabulary of late-nineteenth-century porcelain manufacture. Pink and purple roses cluster at intervals around a curved border, while small blue birds—rendered in the style favored by Japanese export ceramics—provide counterpoint to the floral forms. A blue decorative band frames the composition. Sketch lines at lower right indicate the plate's curved profile. Noritake, established in Japan's Aichi prefecture in 1876, emerged as a major exporter of decorated porcelain to Western markets, blending Asian aesthetic principles with European taste. Such designs, developed in Tokyo and New York showrooms, typified the commercial exchange that shaped both Japanese and American decorative arts in this period.
