Snow Shoe Tobacco Wrapper

Scotten-Dillon Co. · circa 1900

Snow Shoe Tobacco Wrapper
This tobacco wrapper from the Scotten-Dillon Company of Detroit features illustrated advertising art typical of turn-of-the-century commercial packaging. The design uses bold typography and a central figure in motion—a common visual strategy for consumer goods competing for shelf attention. The wrapper combines text and image across its surface, with the brand name prominently displayed alongside product promises. Such wrappers served as everyday graphic design, reaching consumers through general stores and tobacco shops. The illustrated approach to commercial packaging of this era paralleled developments in newspaper advertising, where similar visual techniques appeared in early Sunday supplements and advertisements that would influence the emerging visual language of comic strips.
