Design for Trivet, Fighting Horses

Design for Trivet, Fighting Horses
William Hunt Diederich's sketch depicts two horses engaged in combat, biting and rearing against each other within a circular composition. This design served as a preparatory study for a decorative trivet—a practical household object that bridged functional metalwork with artistic expression. Diederich, a Hungarian-born American metalsmith and sculptor, employed dynamic line work to capture animal movement and aggression. The vigorous sketching technique conveys musculature and tension, demonstrating how designers of this period translated fine art studies into domestic metalwork. Such objects exemplified the Arts and Crafts movement's philosophy: elevating everyday items through skilled craftsmanship and imaginative design.
