Spotted Tail and Family
Kasebier, Gertrude · 1898

Gertrude Käsebier's photograph documents Spotted Tail, a Brulé Lakota leader, with two family members posed before a tipi. Käsebier, already established as New York's leading society portraitist, undertook this project during a pivotal moment in her career. The composition demonstrates her distinctive approach to portraiture: careful attention to clothing detail, dignified posture, and natural positioning. Shot in platinum print, a costly process favoring fine gradations and subtle tonality, the image reflects Käsebier's commitment to elevating photography as fine art. Her work from this period helped legitimize photography within artistic circles during the 1890s.
