The Darktown Fire Brigade: Under Full Steam
This color lithograph by Currier & Ives depicts a chaotic fire brigade scene with African American figures performing antics around a steam-powered fire engine—some operating the pump, others tangled in hoses or fleeing in panic. The composition uses dynamic diagonal lines and overlapping figures to convey frantic movement, techniques borrowed from sequential narrative art. Part of the widely distributed "Darktown Comics" series, these prints were popular entertainment in the 1880s. The theatrical chaos and crowded staging would influence later comic strip composition, while the print's accessibility and mass production made such imagery ubiquitous in American homes.
