Troops Waiting to Advance at Hattonchâtel - St. Mihiel Drive
William James Aylward's drawing documents American soldiers in a moment of quiet before combat during the St. Mihiel Offensive in France. Working in charcoal, ink wash, and gouache, Aylward captures soldiers seated and conversing beneath a ruined stone archway, their figures rendered with careful attention to uniform detail and individual posture. The composition uses the architectural frame to organize the composition while the bright sky beyond suggests the imminent action ahead. As a combat artist, Aylward recorded the daily reality of trench warfare—not heroic charge but the tense waiting that preceded it.
