American Troops Supply Train
William James Aylward's gouache and oil composition documents the logistical operations of American forces during World War I. The scene depicts a supply depot in action: soldiers manage horse-drawn wagons laden with provisions and equipment while others organize supplies in the foreground. Shell-damaged buildings frame the encampment, their scarred walls evidence of proximity to active combat zones. Aylward captures the coordinated movement of men and materiel—the unglamorous but essential machinery of modern warfare. Rendered with careful attention to light and architectural detail, the work preserves a moment of organized effort amid the dislocations of industrial-scale conflict.
