Courtyard in Echternach
War Department · 1918

J. André Smith's sketch documents a military encampment in the Luxembourg town of Echternach during World War I. Rendered in mixed media with fine pen work and watercolor wash, the drawing captures soldiers, supply wagons, and horses gathered around a courtyard bordered by stone buildings. A bare tree rises prominently at center, while troops cluster beneath a canvas canopy on the left. Smith's trained architectural hand defines the buildings' facades with precise line work, contrasting with the looser rendering of figures and animals. The composition conveys the practical reality of wartime billeting—soldiers occupying civilian spaces, animals requiring care, supplies needing organization. Smith's careful observation transforms military routine into a historical document of daily life during the Great War's final year.
