The Hand Grenade

Dunn, Harvey Thomas · 1918

The Hand Grenade
Harvey Thomas Dunn's charcoal and pastel drawing captures five German soldiers in a dugout reacting to an incoming grenade. Two soldiers dive for cover while others brace themselves; one figure at left gestures in alarm. Harsh light floods through the entrance, illuminating the chaos of combat. Dunn, a prominent illustrator and war correspondent, rendered the scene with documentary precision, emphasizing the visceral terror of trench warfare. His work exemplifies early twentieth-century combat illustration, where dynamic figure composition and dramatic lighting conveyed immediate action and human vulnerability in modern warfare.
