The Machine Gunner
Dunn, Harvey Thomas · 1918

Harvey Dunn's sketch depicts a World War I soldier in full combat kit, rendered with economical ink lines and wash. The figure's taut posture and direct gaze convey alertness and readiness. Dunn, a prolific illustrator for major publications, helped establish the visual conventions that would define twentieth-century sequential art: dynamic figure work, efficient line language, and psychological intensity. Created during America's involvement in the Great War, this study exemplifies how illustrators translated contemporary experience into visual form—a practice foundational to the developing grammar of comics and their narrative power.
