The Judge, "Out in the Cold"
This single-panel comic from *The Judge* demonstrates the visual conventions emerging in 1880s newspaper humor: sequential narrative told through exaggerated character types, hand-lettered speech and signage, and careful cross-hatching that allowed for mass reproduction. The scene depicts Chinese immigrants denied entry at a tenement door. The composition shows sophisticated staging: multiple figures, interior-exterior contrast, and readable expressions that would influence comic strips' visual language for decades to come.
