Hum-Bug
Max Rosenthal · 1851

This hand-colored lithograph by Max Rosenthal merges human portraiture with entomological grotesquerie, depicting a man's head grafted onto a large black beetle's body. The six jointed legs terminate in sharp claws, while the figure wears period dress including a cravat and gold-trimmed collar. Created decades before the newspaper comic strip emerged, this work employs caricature and impossible transformation—visual strategies that would become foundational to comics. The anthropomorphic insect references popular 19th-century traditions of metamorphosis satire. Rosenthal's hand-tinted technique captures fine anatomical detail in the beetle's chitinous form while maintaining the subject's facial likeness, a technical skill central to early lithographic portraiture and print humor.
