Portrait of John Pendleton Kennedy
Joseph Kayler's 1852 portrait depicts John Pendleton Kennedy, the Maryland politician, lawyer, and man of letters who served in Congress and as Secretary of the Navy. Rendered in lithograph with skilled attention to fabric texture and facial modeling, the work captures Kennedy in formal dress—bow tie, waistcoat, tailored coat—positioned in a three-quarter view against a neutral background. Kayler's technique, employing fine cross-hatching and tonal gradation, exemplifies the commercial portraiture that defined mid-nineteenth-century American printmaking, when lithography enabled wide distribution of political and cultural figures to the reading public.
