Joseph Stella Self-Portrait

Joseph Stella · 1907

Joseph Stella Self-Portrait
Italian-born painter Joseph Stella rendered this self-portrait in blue gouache on cork board, capturing himself in three-quarter profile with emphatic linear hatching. The work demonstrates Stella's engagement with early modernist portraiture during his formative years in New York. Born in 1877, Stella would become a central figure in American Futurism and urban modernism, but this intimate study reveals his grounding in European figurative tradition. The economical blue palette against warm cork creates a striking chromatic tension, while the gestural brushwork suggests both psychological introspection and formal experimentation. This period preceded his celebrated industrial landscapes and Brooklyn Bridge paintings that would define his mature practice.
